The Association of Atlantic RV Parks and Campgrounds and its members were disappointed in The Premier of Newfoundland’s recent announcement that outlined a Stage 5 Alert process whereby Private Campgrounds are not scheduled to re-open for overnight accommodation until Level Alert 2. The Province is currently at Level Alert 5 which means that the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador will not be able to enjoy our great camping destinations until later in the summer.

We have sent the following email The Honourable Dwight Ball Premier of Newfoundland in support of our members:

The COVID-19 crisis has been unprecedented and devastating and the Association of Atlantic RV Parks and Campgrounds and its Private Campground members in Newfoundland and Labrador would like to take this opportunity to extend our deep appreciation for your efforts undertaken thus far to ensure that the citizens of our Province remain safe and healthy.

The Association of Atlantic RV Parks and Campgrounds is dedicated to providing a safe and secure camping experience and we have been working diligently with our members to put together the attached health and safety guidelines that the Province could use as a reference to deliberate a change in policy to allow for Private Campgrounds to open earlier at Level Alert Stage 4.

Private Campgrounds in Newfoundland and Labrador are open and generating revenue for an average of 124 days a year when we need our revenue to be sufficient to handle the operating expenses (especially land debt payments) for the entire year. A delayed opening until Level Alert 2 would seriously jeopardize our businesses future. With your current model, day use only in Alert Level 3 does not make sense. To give you a comparison, would you pay money for a hotel room if you were not allowed to stay overnight? It would be the same for our Private Campgrounds so essentially we are at severe risk if we have to wait for Alert Level 4 and we could all lose our entire year.

We are confident that our campgrounds and their consumers will absolutely follow these recommended guidelines that would allow the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador an our campers to continue to self distance while they are able to enjoy the outdoors and our beautiful destinations.

The RV and Camping Industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is an integral component in our tourism and generates significantly to the economy across Canada and especially in our Province. Many Private Campgrounds risk the prospect of closing entirely if our season is delayed, so given the alternative, we are fully committed to following these policies and firmly believe that we can modify our business model to ensure that the health and safety of our workers and campers are maintained.

We would like to thank you again for your efforts to combat COVID-19 and we are ready to work with the appropriate agencies to establish guidelines that would permit our Private Campgrounds to open in Stage 4 for seasonal overnight accommodation.
