On July 19, Gary Foster, the Mayor of NRRM and Peace River North MLA Dan Davies, as well as Edward Hoffman, Regional Director Northern Region,, wrote a letter to George Heyman (Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy) expressing their support for the opening of the .
The letter states that the Muncho Lake Lodge &, previously owned by the private sector, was acquired by in 2020 in order to add a to the area, the report said.
Foster claims that all the parks in the area, including Strawberry Flats, Liard River Hot Springs, and MacDonald, were used well before the COVID-19 pandemic, the report mentioned.
Only the Liard River Hot Springs, out of all four parks, is currently open for registration. The other three operate on a first-come-first-served system.
The letter stated an issue regardingtrying to reserve a spot at the , which is located two hours from Fort Nelson. Cell phone service was also not available.
The letter states that “since thepreviously known as Muncho lake Lodge & Park was closed, there has been an evident impact on supply and demand of in the Muncho Lake area.”
According to the report, the NRRM expects a rise in rural and remote recreation after the COVID-19 pandemic. The NRRM expects a busy summer 2022season and wants to activate the Muncho Lake as soon as possible.
