Alberta Town Rec Facility Expansion Put On Hold

The Devon Town Council made the difficult decision at their September 13 meeting to delay an expansion plan for the Dale Fisher Arena after receiving the final cost estimate to finish the project, a report said.

In June, the town awarded its Construction Management Services contract to Bird Construction Group Ltd. to collaborate in conjunction with TBD Architecture & Urban Planning to ensure the expansion cost.

The final cost was then given before Council with the construction costs for the facility amounting to $29.95M, unfortunately not an achievable figure that the Town could deal with at this point.

Many factors have contributed to the final price of the new recreation facility, such as the inflated cost for material for construction, shifting size of the project, and the ability to keep the public’s access throughout the building.

Town Administration has been instructed to look at other funding options to determine whether the project can proceed in the manner it was initially planned.

Costs incurred so far by the Town in the expansion project, including Climate Change Resilience Assessment, GHG Mitigation Assessment, Design and Engineering Services, and Construction Management Services, are all admissible for reimbursement through the grant program.

The project is one of the first items the Council is briefed about following elections for municipal office on Oct. 18. Additional information will be distributed to the community.
